Therapeutic Yoga Works with Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby

Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby says she's "in training for the next decade."

In the world of wellness, the term "yoga" often conjures images of flexible bodies gracefully contorting into intricate poses. However, as Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby explains in our recent podcast episdode, therapeutic yoga offers a different approach—one that is accessible and beneficial for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities.

From Uncertainty to Purpose

Dr. Tijerina Darby’s journey into physical therapy and yoga began in high school.  She was driven by a desire for deeper patient connections beyond conventional medical visits. She studied at Texas Women’s University, merging her passion for movement with her education. In her 20s, Nydia connected physical activity to mental health through her own battles with anxiety and depression.  This motivated her to help others in the Hispanic community recognize the healing power of movement.

The Birth of Therapeutic Yoga

Nydia recognized a gap in traditional therapy.  She found that the focus was only on specific injuries, not overall well-being.  This insight inspired her to integrate yoga, tai chi, and martial arts into her unique therapeutic yoga approach. "I aim to help individuals improve their movement, recognize their strengths, and understand their limitations," she explains. This holistic method addresses physical pain and fosters mental and emotional health at the Open Hand Institute and Nydia's Yoga Therapy Studio in San Antonio.

Overcoming Misconceptions

Dr. Tijerina Darby tackles the misconception that yoga requires flexibility or fitness, which deters many from participating. In her book, *Therapeutic Yoga Works*, she aims to demystify therapeutic yoga, focusing on its gentle approach to relieving back pain and improving mobility. By sharing her story and promoting body positivity, she encourages everyone to embrace their unique bodies, stating, “You don’t have to look like the cover of a magazine to practice yoga.”

A Vision for the Future

Nydia intends to expand her influence through writing, workshops, and community education, focusing on self-care for healthcare providers. “My goal is to change the world,” she says, striving to create a community that prioritizes mental and physical health..

Key Takeaways

For those interested in Nydia's approach, she encourages individuals to explore therapeutic yoga sessions, whether in person or through online resources. Starting small with simple practices that incorporate breathwork and gentle movements can lead to significant improvements in both physical and emotional health.

In a world that often emphasizes quick results over sustainable health practices, Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby aims to serve as a beacon of hope, guiding others on a path of self-discovery and holistic healing through therapeutic yoga.
